
ACTIVITIES
Each year the Optimist Club of Hopewell sponsors the following programs:
Youth Appreciation Week - Held each year in November The Club sponsors a breakfast for the Homecoming Court and sponsors, The Club also conducts a half time program at a football game.
Donations are made to Patrick Copeland, Dupont and Harry E. James Elementary and Carter S. Woodson Middle Schools for school identified projects.During the annual banquet attended by participants and parents, awards are made to deserving students. Donations are made to the Senior Class, Mixed Company and the Junior ROTC program of Hopewell High School The program is televised by T.J. video on cable television.
Christmas Families - The Club sponsors needy families with food, clothes and gifts each year at christmas.
Baptist Children's Home - Christmas Party -Sponsored annually in December with goodies, gifts and fellowship, for orphaned children.
Fall Sports Banquet - Banquet to honor and recognize athletes in the fall Sports programs at Hopewell High School. The program is televised by T.J, Video on cable television
Youth In Government Provides support for the Youth that annually take over the city government for a day. A trip to the Virginia General Assembly is always a highlight of the week.
American Legion Baseball Team - Annual monetary donation to the team.
Youth Bowling Banquet - Concludes the Youth Bowling League season with a banquet at the annual awards banquet.
Sports Teams - Sponsors two Youth Baseball Teams and the entire league for girls softball involving 13 teams.
Bike Safety Program - Four Schools, Harry E. James, Patrick Copeland, Patrick Copeland Annex, and Dupont, participate annually. Each year skill tests in bike riding and bike inspections are conducted. Two bikes and plaques are given away as prizes. The program helps educate youth in proper bike safety.
Spring Sports Banquet - Banquet to honor and recognize athletes in the winter and spring sports program at Hopewell High School.
Oratorical Contest - Held each year in February. Contest is for 15 years of age and under. Winner at club level represents club at Zone level. There is a boy and girl winner. District winner is awarded a scholarship.
Youth Fishing Tournament - Held each year in June. Awards are given for most fish, first fish,and largest fish caught. Tee shirts for the first 200 entrants. Each youth receives a prize. Everyone including families, treated to a cookout
Partners In Education - A deserving teacher is selected and honored annually.
After Prom Party - The Optimist club makes monetary and material donations as well as volunteers for chaperones to this annual event at Hopewell High School to keep students off the streets and at the party after the prom ends.
ScholarshIp Program For High School Seniors -Each year the Optimist Club awards a vocational and a scholastic scholarship at Hopewell High School, to a boy or girl who demonstrates good grades,involved in school activities, and civic endeavors.
Hopewell Optimist Baseball Classic Tournament- Held each year in July, twenty teams from South Side Virginia, participate in this annual classic started in1978.
Coaches/Umpires Banquet - Banquet to recognize city coaches and umpires from the city leagues.All volunteers from the Baseball Classic Tournament are invited to the banquet.
Super Kids Foundation - Donation made annually to this program for handicapped youth in Woo Davies honor for his contribution to Kids Fishing Tournament.

BBQ Sales - BBQ sales during early November.
Christmas Tree Sales - Christmas tree sales starting the last weekend in November, on our lot at 16th Avenue and Washington Circle location.
Brunswick Stew Sales - Sale of Brunswick stew late February or early March.
